Can stretch marks be prevented during pregnancy?

stretch Marks
southernchick asked:

Hi,
i am about 10 weeks pregnant, and i have heard so many different stories about stretch marks during pregnancy. some people say it is all based on genetics(if your mother had them, then you will too) but others say the can be prevented with certain types of belly cream or lotion. i really reallly want to avoid them if at all possible. can anyone tell me what they know about preventing stretch marks and if it is possible. and also if anybody who answers this has been through pregnancy wihtout getting them could you please include the lotion you used during pregnancy.
thanks.

Sorry but you can’t prevent them. It has to do with the elasticity in your skin. Lotion helps the itching though.

I don’t know if anything actually works. I have spoken to women who used all the expensive creams, several times a day, but still got them and others that used nothing and didn’t. I think it is hard to tell how your body is going to be based on another person’s body.

    good luck!

I am 36 weeks and 4 days and do not have any stretch marks. I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with lotions or anything of the sort. But I use Suave Cocoa Butter lotion after I get out of the shower because my skin always has been itchy right out of the shower. I use it all over my body. Suave also has body wash in cocoa butter. I know if you use them that your won’t itch but you may still get stretch marks.

Stretch marks reflect the separation of collagen of the skin. While not painful, the stretching of the skin may cause a tingling or itchy sensation. A good lotion can help with the increased dryness or itchiness of the skin, but will not prevent stretch marks no matter how diligent you are or how much you spend on the cream.

While many people will swear by certain creams or lotions, the truth is there is not much you can do about stretch marks, you’ll either get them or you won’t. There are some factors that you should know contribute to stretch marks:

Family (If your mom or sister has them, guess what?)

If you had them in a previous pregnancy you may get them again, although usually just a darkened (temporarily) of the old ones and a light extension sometimes.

Weight Gain (Rapid or excessive will make this worse.)

Nutritional Status (Well hydrated and healthy skin stretches better.)

Ethnicity (African American women get them less.)

On a positive note, my mom has a TON, and I got none.

You will definately get stretch marks, love. The best way to make sure that you get less of them and that they aren’t severe is to make sure that you are always well hydrated and use a lot of lotion. This will increase your skin elasticity and more elastic skin equals less stretch marks.

Some people get them, some don’t. I did not get any but again, I was only 20 years old. I think, older women tend to get more strech mark as your skin is losing its elasticity.

try using the lotion named palmer’s cocoa butter lotion”. they are very affordable and it is available in most of the drug and grocery stores. rub the lotion 3 times a day.

You can’t prevent them, but you won’t necessarily get them. I was underweight when I first became pregnant and have gotten stretch marks on my booty (which is HUGE now) and inner thighs. But I haven’t gotten them on my stomach.

It all depends on your skin and your family history. If your mom got stretch marks, then most likely you will too. If she didn’t then you may get lucky!

Lotion helps with the itching because scratching can make them worse. Luckily after giving birth they fade away to white!

You can’t prevent them. They are biological. Don’t waste your money on treatments or prevention, the only thing you can do is try to increase your skin’s elasticity. Drink lots of water, make sure you’re getting your recommended daily dose of vitamin e and c and do light excersises if your doctor says it’s ok.

It really just depends on the individual, some people get them and some people are lucky enough not too. They are unattractive but most pregnant women get them and they do fade after a while, you can try using a cream like coca butter but there is no guarantee.

If your gonna get them then its inevitable. You can help reduce them with lotion like every one else has been saying. As your skin stretches it itches. I have heard that scratching at it alot will also increase risk of worsening stratch marks. Dont know if its true or not, just thought it might be helpful. So anytime that my belly started to itch while I was pregnant, I just rubbed the itchy area with some lotion to kill two birds with one stone!!
