How did you prevent your stretch marks during pregnancy?
Kim B asked:
I’m so afraid of getting stretch marks. I have been using bio oil & cocoa butter twice a day. Any tips on anything else to use or do to prevent stretch marks. I heard that genetics has a lot to do with it. Thanks!

You’re right, genetics has everything to do with it. So if you’re genetically prone to get them then you will. Did your mother or grandmother get stretch marks? If so then it’s a high possibility that you will to and there isn’t anything you do to prevent them.
I didn’t get a single one until 37 weeks and then I got a few around my belly button.

Genetics have everything to do with it. There’s not a potion out there than can prevent them. If you’re going to get them, you’ll get them.

It is more genetics, but I used Curel’s pregnancy lotion the whole time (I’m 33 weeks now) and I don’t have any yet.

Good luck with that! I tried to prevent them, but I failed. I got them pretty bad all over. Mostly because I swelled up like a balloon. Oh, well….they fade in color.

Stretch marks has almost everything to do with genetics!
When I was pregnant I drank 10-12 cups of water per day (I was pregnant mostly during the summer), I took my prenatals and had a pretty healthy and well-balanced diet, I took vitamin E pills, I used stretch mark prevention cream, cocoa butter and olive oil! I tried everything I could to prevent stretch marks! I thought I was home-free, but once I hit 36/37 weeks, BAM! They came and they came freely until the very end!
But you should still try to prevent them by staying healthy, hydrated, moisturized, and not gaining any more weight then is recommended. Maybe it can help to at least minimize any possible stretch marks.
Or… Maybe you’ll be one of the lucky few who never get them.

My friends have used Palmers Cocoa Butter Massage Stretch Mark Cream and it helped remarkably to prevent stretch marks. You can get it at Walgreens.

you can do everything possible and still get them. My mother has them so when i got preggo i tried lotion, cocoa butter and my mother in law even bought me an ointment that says it prevents stretch marks…….let me tell you i have them EVERYWHERE on my tummy, a little on my hips and I even have some on my thighs (up high). they ****!! The only good thing I can say about them I that when i see them i think of my kids and how much they mean to me, they were worth it

It is genetics, but if you don’t gain a ridiculous amount of weight then you should be able to control it to a certain extent.
My mother got them on her lower back and hips, but nothing hideous, so I have already begun focusing more attention to those areas. Also, my mother is 5 ft 2 in and weighed about 100 lbs when she got pregnant with me, and back in the day it was eat, eat, eat - it’s healthy for the baby. She gained more than she should have….
I’m more afraid of stretch marks than anything else with pregnancy… I can’t help it, I’m vain. But if you get them, you get them - oh well!

Sorry to say, but there is no way to prevent stretch marks. I have tried all kinds of lotions & oils, and nothing helped. And in regards to genetics, my Mom had 8 children and did not have one stretch mark. There is nothing wrong with stretch marks, it’s just another reminder of being a Mom. They do fade with time. I’m proud of mine! They just remind me of the beautiful children I was able to have.

i was a big lotion wearer before i got pregnant. i think that has helped me not get any stretch marks. i was scared of getting them as well because my mom has them really bad. but before she got pregnant she never put lotion on regularly. so i don’t think you could have just started wearing lotion, it should have already been in your routine. also, drink lots of water because it helps with skin elasticity.

Fresh stretch marks appear initially as red lines and then slowly fade to a pale white color over the course of several months. Below is the link regarding Stretch Marks.
